For what felt like the first remotely nice day of the year, I wrapped up warm and headed out on a solo adventure to Bolsover Castle in Derbyshire. I’ve never been to the castle but it’s been on my little local bucketlist so was excited to see it in person. Just a short train and bus journey from Sheffield, this English Heritage gem is easy to travel to.
The impressive Stuart mansion has incredible views of Derbyshire and was once owned by the Cavendish family. If history has anything to say it also sounds like it was the original playboy mansion of it’s day, with many a lavish party thrown here.
You can still wander the rooms of the ‘little castle’ and take in some of the original decor.
The Star Chamber is my favourite room in the castle, I couldn’t stop staring at the ceiling. How do I get one of these in my bedroom?
The day was so quiet I practically had the castle grounds to myself, literally a perfect break from real life.
The views when you walk along the castle walls are breathtaking. Also, dogs are allowed on the grounds, so bring your furry friend for a stroll around the grounds, they just can’t go inside the buildings. At the entrance there’s a small cafe and gift shop too so you can grab lunch and a souvenir before the journey home.
