I’ve been meaning to do this post for a while, but thanks to the release of Winchester the film, I got the kick up the butt I needed.
I’m beyond fortunate to have the best 2nd family which have taken me into their home multiple times in San Jose, California. On my first trip to San Jose, Mel told me the story of Winchester Mystery House, a bright colourful mansion across from the local shopping mall.
It’s previous owner Sarah Winchester, was the widow of William Winchester, who owned the Winchester Rifle Company. After the death of her husband and children she believed she was cursed so sought the advice of a medium. He told her she was being haunted by the spirits of those killed by her family’s rifle company and she should build a house just for her and the spirits.. She constantly worked on the mansion, always changing the layout to try to trick the spirits to stop them following her. There are doors that lead to nowhere (literally, off the side of the building), crazy staircases and strange decor (more on that here).
We never got round to actually commiting to booking a tour of the house until my third trip over in 2014 and it was definitely worth the wait.
To book a tour click here.
You start the tour in the courtyard, before moving inside the house and then exploring the gardens. Photos aren’t allowed in the house, but here’s some snaps I took of the exterior.
Above you can spot the door to nowhere.
The manicured gardens and the colourful mansion are right out of a Disney film.
If you ever find yourself in San Francisco or Santa Cruz, it’s not a long drive to visit the house in San Jose.
